OccupyGhana Issues “Strong Opposition” Over KNUST Council Dissolution, Calls Interim Council ‘illegal’

Pressure group OccupyGhana has kicked against the dissolution of the Governing Council of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and says that action of the Education Ministry is illegal.

Also illegal, the group says, is the decision to constitute an Interim Council to oversee the affairs of the University.

According to OccupyGhana in a statement it issued Monday, October 29, neither the government nor any of its agencies, including the National Council for Tertiary Education may usurp any of the powers vested by law in the appointing authorities.

The group also said the Governing Council is constituted by nominations from named institutions and bodies and that the Government cannot purport to reconstitute the Council without affording the named institutions or bodies, the opportunity to appoint or elect their respective representatives to serve on any reconstituted Council.

The University was shut down last week following students demonstrations that degenerated into riots, leading to the destruction of properties. The government, as an interim measure, dissolved the Council and announced an interim team to administer the University.
