God Bless Otumfuo For Intervening In KNUST Impasse - Wassa East MP

Member of Parliament for Wassa East constituency, Isaac Agyei Mensah has commended Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for intervening in the impasse involving KNUST authorities and their students.

The Asantehene held talks with stakeholders of the University at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi to find a lasting solution to the current crisis at Ghana’s foremost Science University.

Present at the meeting were members of the dissolved Governing Council, University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) and Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU).

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who doubles as the Chancellor of the University intervened to restore calm following a violent demonstration by the students on campus against the authorities.

The protesters staged a massive demonstration to have their concerns addressed by the University authorities.

Their paramount concerns among other decisions taken by the University Governing Council at the behest of the Vice Chancellor (VC), Professor Kwasi Obiri-Danso are about the mix of females with males at Katanga hall and other male halls.

After the incident, a 7-member interim Council was set up by government to oversee the affairs of the University but some groups like UTAG, TEWU and Occupy Ghana as well as some political figures have termed the government's action as illegal.

Commenting on the Asantehene meeting with the stakeholders, Hon. Isaac Agyei Mensah believed Otumfuo's intervention has helped to restore peace and ensure that the right steps are taken to resolve the conflict at KNUST.

According to him, the government's establishment of an interim Council was a wrong move because they didn't consult with Otumfuo before taking such decision.

Hon. Agyei Mensah thanked Otumfuo saying "the step he has taken is good. God bless him. This is the mark of great leadership”.
