The Committee of Eminent Chiefs who have been working on the Dagbon crises will today present their recommendations to the President Nana Akufo-Addo at Jubilee House.
The recommendations will focus on how to achieve a peaceful end to the Dagbon crises.
Agreement reached to perform funerals
The Otumfuo-led Mediation Committee on the Dagbon peace process has successfully facilitated an agreement between the Abudu and Andani feuding parties to perform the funerals of the late two Yaa-Naas of Dagbon to pave way for lasting peace.
The mediation committee resolved that the Abudu Royal Family performs the funeral of the late Yaa-Naa Mahamadu Abdulai IV, beginning December 14 to 28, 2018 while the funeral of the late Yaa-Naa Yakubu Andani II be performed on January 4 to 18, 2019.
Over a decade now the parties have been engaging on how to find peace at the feet of the eminent chiefs.
Upon assuming power, President Akufo-Addo injected resources, time and commitment into the decade long process.
He has also assisted in providing the necessary assurances that eliminated suspicions that prolonged a peaceful resolution to the matter.
President to facilitate implementation of recommendations
The President is expected to take steps to facilitate the implementation of recommendations that will lead to peace in Dagbon.
A statement issued in Tamale and read at a media briefing, the two funeral rites of the late two kings is to be performed at the old Gbewaa Palace in Yendi in the Northern Region.
Mahama Sintaro, a Convener of the statement, appealed to both Abudu and Andani Royal Gates to remain resolute while focusing on the singular objective of organizing the funeral of the late Yaa-Naa with pride and harmony to mark the occasion of a historical moment.
He said, “We must remain vigilant against hostile and aggressive tendencies seeking to undermine this momentous opportunity for peace and development. “We call on the Northern Regional Coordinating Council (NRCC), the various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDA’s) to facilitate the promotion of peace, and tolerance among our people,” he added.
“The Northern Regional Security Council (REGSEC), religious leaders and opinion leaders must ignore machinations by chieftaincy contractors whose ‘evil’ plots marred previous attempts to resolve the issues.
“We urge creativity, tolerance and tact on the part of elders from both families with responsibility for the performance of these funerals, which will bring lasting peace to Dagbon,” he stressed.
The statement further added that “We are resolute in our commitment to support the process, and to stand up against anybody seeking to thwart this process. “Dagbon deserves peace, cultural harmony and a healthy continuity of the time-tested traditional system of administration,” the statement further added.
Mahama expressed gratitude to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Nayiri Naa Bohagu Abdulai Mahama Sheriga, the King of the Maprugu Traditional Council and the Yagbonwura Tuntumba Boresa, King of the Gonja Traditional Council for their level of wisdom, diplomacy as well as patience for the mediations leading to the peaceful resolution of the problem.
He appealed to religious leaders to preach peace, tolerance and understanding among the youth, while lauding government’s commitment at ensuring lasting peace in the historical influential descendants of NaaGbewaa.
