VRA To Develop EPP To Minimise Possible Casualties

The VRA is in the process of preparing An Emergency Preparedness Plan (EPP) which will outline actions to be taken by the VRA and other appropriate authorities to minimize possible casualties in case of any disaster that may occur at the Akosombo and Kpong Dams. The EPP is a major requirement of the International Commission On Large Dams (ICOLD) and the World Commission On Dams (WCD) which seek to promote best practices for the operation of large dams. Mr. Kwesi Andoh Awotwe, CEO of the VRA made this known in Accra today at a workshop on EPP. It was attended by participants from VRA, NADMO, hydrological services department, the security agencies and district assemblies. Mr. Kweku Awotwe said the royal Haskoning-Norplan which is a consultancy firm based in Norway and Holland has been contracted to develop the Emergency Preparedness Plan (EPP) for the VRA. He said the project is being funded by the World Bank. Mr. Awotwe pointed out that the preparation of the EPP for Akosombo and Kpong Dams does not mean that the dams are in any danger. Mr. Francis Kyere, the EPP Project Manager of VRA, said the VRA has some existing mechanism to contain the emergency situations which may occur before the completion of the EPP.
