Male Condoms More Popular Than Female Condoms

The Deputy Director General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr Gloria Quansah-Asare, says the lack of resources is impeding various campaigns of the PPAG.

"Child marriages remain high but continue to be addressed, gender based violence issues, fistula and others are also being addressed. HIV/AIDS have received good response…but there isn’t much resources. We have made some improvement but there is much more to be done. We need to move beyond the usual to the all-inclusive sustainable goals; leaving no one behind" she said while speaking at a maiden Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana public lecture and launch of the African Citizen Initiative (ACI) in Accra on Wednesday, November 5.

Commenting on family planning, she said most sexually active women feel reluctant in using female condoms, making the use of the male condoms increase.

"...female condoms are also vanishing from the indicators; out of no use".

She further indicated that, "our policy is that we are not supposed to turn anybody away on the merit of marital status…when you check, you can see that the unmarried sexually active are using contraceptives more" than married.

The objective of the ACI campaign is to raise funds to support and sustain PPAG activities, to inspire and empower individuals and groups to invest in health services and educational programmes that keep everybody safe and healthy.

It is also to recruit donors who will contribute funding on a month, quarterly or annual basis in support of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) programmes and projects, as well as help to inculcate the culture of volunteerism in Ghanaians especially among the youth.

PPAG established in 1967, has been a key partner in ensuring safety of mother, family planning, addressing issues of infidelity, prevention and management of unsafe abortion, abolition of trokosi, female genital mutilation, issues of the male and female reproduction, sexual reproduction and so on.

Through its vibrant and well experienced volunteers and staff, PPAG works to complement government's efforts in the provision of SRHR information and services to the general population particularly adolescents, men, women and vulnerable groups including Persons living with Disability.
