Adopt Self Employment Mentality After School; Not Govt Work - NYA Boss Urges

The National Youth Authority (NYA) is on a mission to make its mandate relevant by instituting a solid youth policy that can stand the test of time to help government champion projects in the interest of the youth.

As a result, the Authority engaged stakeholders in Greater Accra region on a review of the National Policy Framework on last Monday 17th December, 2018 at Accra Digital Center.

According to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the NYA, Hon. Emmanuel Asigri, "the policy in its current form is not fit for its purpose after going through the old policy document.

"we have realized that there is no section where specific provisions have been made for young women and even the physically challenged hence the review policy", he recounted.

Mr. Asigri also advice the youth to get rid of government work mentality after school and venture into some area where it is hands on activity.

‘Aside some one going through tertiary and having a mind set of only wearing shirt and tie, venture into some areas where it is hands on activity; learn a trade in sowing, hairdressing".

I himself is an example; I am a farmer but I am not asking everybody to be a farmer as well but you can choose another profession after school”, he said.

He insisted that with the current global state, people should get rid of going to school and coming back to the government for employment.

"Things get changing therefore the youth of our country should also change. Youth unemployment is not only government problem but our collective mandate so we should all look into it and solve the problem holistically", he stated.

He also charged private sectors not to pay attention to specific areas that only interest them.

“Don’t use your corporate social responsibility in promoting only things that interest you because I believe if private sectors also offer to help in one way or the other we can be able to eradicate some of these challenges” he stressed.

Section of the stakeholders applauded National Youth Authority for such a laudable initiative and also the opportunity to be involved in the decision making body, especially in issues confronting the youth in the country
