The Chief Executive Officer of National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr Samuel Yaw Annor says the National Health Insurance Scheme has benefited lots of Ghanaians for the past 15 years.

Speaking at a lecture held at the British Council on Tuesday, December 18, 2018, under the theme “15 Years Of The NHIA, The Journey So Far, Successes, Challenges And The Way Forward”, Dr Samuel Yaw Annor highlighted the success of the scheme since its inception in Ghana.

The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) was established by the Government of Ghana to provide basic healthcare to the Ghanaian citizenry through mutual and private health insurance schemes. The District Mutual, Private Mutual and Private Commercial Schemes are regulated by the NHIA.

The NHIA unveiled a new NHIS Mobile Renewal and Digital Authentication policy which will allow users to renew their health insurance on their mobile phones when it is out of date.

According to Dr. Annor, people can now register and renew their card online, and those without money have the privilege to go to hospital to access healthcare.

The new policy, which has been introduced to relieve subscribers of the burden of having to go to the NHIS District offices as well as reduce congestion,was officially launched by the President on Wednesday, December 19, 2018 in Accra.

The new development would enable registered NHIS users to be notified ahead of expiry dates in order to deal with the uncertainties that members may encounter and also prevent the situation where others are denied access to medical care in hospitals, he added.

Dr. Annor further appealed to the media to sensitize the general public on the new renewal policy.
