Driver dies in accident

Kofi Tetteh, a driver, died on the spot when the cargo truck he was driving, loaded with cement, collided head-on with another articulator truck at Abrewa Nkwanta near Koforidua in the early hours of Friday. The cargo truck number ER 5056C was coming from Tema through the Suhum road and the articulator truck belonging to a Chinese construction company working on the nine-kilometre Kasadjan-Oyoko dual carriageway, was coming from the construction site. According to an eye-witness account, around 07.30 hours on Friday, she spotted the cargo truck coming from the Suhum road about to reach the junction and the articulator truck approached from the Kasadjan road on a top speed. She said when the articulator truck reached the junction it failed to stop for the cargo truck, resulting in a collision which led to the instant death of the driver with his intestines gushing out. According to the eyewitness, the driver of the articulator truck broke the windscreen of his vehicle and got out where he was rushed to the hospital with minor cuts. When the GNA got to the accident spot a huge crowd had gathered hurling insults on the Chinese company for the reckless manner their articulator drivers had been using the road. They appealed to the Motor Transport and Traffic Unit (MTTU) to put in measures to restrain the drivers of the construction company from further endangering the lives of other road users. The Regional MTTU Commander, Police Superintendent James Sarfo Peprah, who was at the scene told GNA that it was the seventh time that an accident involving trucks of the company had occurred and claimed one life while another victim had his leg amputated. According to the MTTU Commander, many complaints from the public had come to his office about the conduct of the company drivers, and that he had on several occasions invited the transport officers to a meeting but they had refused to turn up. He said the construction site was a junction, and therefore it behoved on the company to ensure the safety of other road users. The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Koforidua Central Hospital morgue, whiles investigation into the accident continues.
