The Ghana Journalists Association has instituted an awards scheme to honour slain undercover investigator, Ahmed Hussein-Suale, a member of the Tiger Eye PI team who was shot and killed by some unknown persons.

Speaking at a memorial service for the late investigative journalist, Ahmed Hussein-Suale of Tiger Eye PI held today, Friday, 8 February 2019 at the Ghana International Press Center in Accra, president of the Association, Mr. Affail Monney explained that an award scheme has been instituted to honour the slain journalist.

The award scheme according to Mr. Monney will help to encourage media men to dispense their duties without fear.

"We will want to encourage journalists to take up more of investigative works and not be scared away from their passion by Suale's death. And we believe the award scheme will enable us have more of the Ahmed Suale's and the Anas Aremeyaw's," he said.

Deputy Minister for Information, Pious Enam Hadzide who represented the government explained that the NPP government is committed to ensuring the safety of journalists in the country.

The RTI Bill and other bills which will protect the rights and freedom of journalists in the country in their line of duty have been laid before parliament.

He believes these bills when passed will ensure press freedom.

Among prominent personalities who attended the solemn ceremony included father of late Komla Dumor, Prof. Ernest Dumor, Anas Aremeyaw Anas and veteran journalist, Mr. Kwaku Baako.

The service was organised by the Ghana Journalist Association (GJA) in collaboration with Tiger Eye PI.

Mr Hussein-Suale was assassinated on 16th January, 2019 at Madina, a suburb of Accra.

The police say six suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder, questioned and granted bail.

Apart from the six suspects, ACP David Senanu Eklu, Director-General, Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service, said Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong; former president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Mr Kwesi Nyantakyi; and Ahmed’s boss, Anas Aremeyaw Anas, have all been cautioned and given forms to submit their statement to the police.

Some eyewitnesses, according to ACP Eklu, have also been interviewed by the police.
