The Crowd Fired 3 Gunshots; We Fired Only One - 'Double' Tells Commission of Inquiry

Contrary to a testimony from SWAT Unit Commander at the National Security, DSP Samuel Azugu, that six warning shots were fired during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election at the La-Bawaleshie centre, Bright Ernest Akomea, an operative and a former phone dealer, claims there was only one.

Akomea, popularly known as 'Double' also disclosed that the crowd gathered infront of the NDC Parliamentary candidate, Delali Brempong's house and fired three shots at the operatives; "but none got injured and even if they got injured, they kept it to themselves".

"DSP Azugu instructed the police to fire one warning shot and the crowd retaliated with three gunshots," 'Double' indicated while giving his testimony at the Emile Short Commission of Inquiry.

"There were three warning shots from the crowd and one from our men; later on, the crowd dispersed . . . I cannot tell the number of warning shots we fired. I was not given a weapon but I took one from a driver; I didn’t discharge any weapon; I wasn't instructed to," he said.

'Double' added that apart from the gunshots from the crowd, water and stones were also thrown at them.

According to him, the water was coming from the house of Mr Brempong and the stones were from the crowd.

Agitated crowd

Double also indicated that he could identify about five of the people among the crowd and that they are part of NDC militia. According to him, he's met them before during political party activities.

"I knew some of the people in the agitated crowd…I knew them as part of NDC security…in 2016 they were at a rally at Ashalebotwe and I met them wearing a shirt with the inscription security" he indicated.
