General Secretary of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia says his party is genuinely committed to disband political vigilante groups in the country with the help from all relevant stakeholders.

According to him, President Akufo-Addo should show his readiness and commitment to fighting vigilantism by accepting the call of the main opposition NDC to include stakeholders like; the Kofi Annan Peacekeeping Training Centre and the Peace Council in the process of disbanding vigilante groups.

Speaking on Okay FM’s 'Ade Akye Abia' Morning Show, Asiedu Nketia alleged that President Akufo-Addo cannot be in denial of the existence of all vigilante groups; thus he [Nana Addo] had promised many times to disband the operations of vigilante groups, but never made the attempt until now after the Ayawaso West Wuogon incidence which enjoined him to act.

He insisted the good call of President Akufo-Addo to end vigilantism may not see fruition if he continues with the mindset of limiting the solution to only the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC); thus, the President’s insurgence posture is clear indication that he does not want to disband vigilantism.

“I was surprised to hear him say he will end political vigilantism but then he swiftly said it should be done between NDC and NPP; there and then I said he does not want to disband the vigilante groups,” he alleged.

He strongly held the view that the solution President Akufo-Addo is proposing is something which will not be effective, reiterating that the NDC waited to see an official letter from NPP to the call the President made, but it never came.

He added that “we decided to write to him because it is a matter of concern to us in order to expedite the action to be taken”.

“We pleaded with him in the letter that the two political parties cannot only find solution to vigilantism and so there should be a move to expand the stakeholders to find effective solution to the canker of vigilantism. We wanted him to establish some genuineness for the people to know that indeed he has made up his mind that the nation must fight against vigilantism,” he indicated.

He again mentioned that as at the time that they had not seen De-Eye video, the NDC already heard that government training facilities are being used in training vigilante groups and later recruited into the security agencies.
