Prostate Artery Embolization (PAE) is a new way of treating benign prostatic hyperplasia also known as Prostate enlargement.

According to Dr Ben Sarkodie, an interventional radiology with this new procedure, the patient gets treated and goes back home the same day.

PAE is done by blocking off the arteries that feed blood to the gland, making it starve and shrink in the end.

He says "a small catheter is inserted into the artery in the wrist then guided into the vessels that supply blood to the prostate..."

At the end of the day, “patients go back the same day and the results are as good as having a surgery” and for the men who are worried that such treatment will affect sexual activity, Dr Sarkodie has assured it will not.

However, to qualify for this procedure, various test and examination need to be done to determine if PAE will be suitable or there will be the need for surgery.

Dr Sarkodie has meanwhile, advised men above 40 to have regular checks or screening to make sure “there is no cause for alarm”
