Akufo-Addo's Gov't Insensitive To The Growth of Ghanaian Businesses - Murtala Mohammed

Former Member of Parliament for Nantong Constituency in the Northern Region, Murtala Mohammed says Presdient Akufo-Addo's government is insensitive to the growth of Ghanaian businesses and the indigenous banks.

According to him, the Akufo-Addo administration ought to have envisaged the challenges that confront the banking sector and then inculcate the circumstances of the local and indigenous banks into the rules and regulations governing the conduct of businesses.

Adding his voice to a panel discussion on Radio Gold’s 'Alhaji and Alhaji' talk show, Murtala Ibrahim Mohammed said Akufo-Addo should have considered the local banks that are willing to take the risk and extend loan facility to businesses that may not have certain collaterals which are hugely demanded by the foreign banks.

“We are dealing with banks that are willing to extend loan facilities to businesses that may not have certain collaterals that are hugely demanded by these foreign banks. We are dealing with banks that were operating to a very large extent with small and medium scale enterprises who were operating with the young man and the young woman who sells at Kantamanto, operating with the hawkers on the streets of Accra; operating with the small businesses that are operating in the whole market, operating in the Tamale market as well as the Mallam Atta’s Market,” he bemoaned.

“You are dealing with banks that were willing regardless the risk involved to extend loan facilities to these people who are already struggling because of the economic quagmire that this country is subjected to under this government,” he jabbed.

He stressed that the local banks were dealing with these kinds of people in the country to the extent that they may indeed be exposed to certain risks that these already established foreign banks that are making so much profit on Ghana may not be subjected to.

“Don’t we have problems with this government? Don’t we have problems with ministries and agencies and some of the problems we have are hugely unacceptable, must we say because this government is inept, must we say because we are confronted with problems of security, we are confronted with basic provisions of services for the Ghanaian people, must indeed close down certain ministries or entirely the government should collapse? No!”he wondered.

As Ghanaians are relying on the ability of government to overcome the enormous challenges confronting the nation, Murtala Mohammed insisted President Akufo-Addo and his Finance Minister should have been considerate to give local banks and the indigenous businesses the opportunity and support to come on stream while enforcing the law.
