The Deputy National Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kweku Boahen, has taken a swipe at the leadership of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) for its inability to strictly adhere to the President’s directive on extending an invitation to the biggest opposition party to discuss the 'vigilante issue'.
According to Kweku Boahen, “the fact that the National Chairman of the NPP waited 25 days before writing to the leadership of the NDC is a slap in the face of the President who had instructed them to invite the NDC for talks, in a matter of one week, to find ways of curbing the vigilante menace”.
In a panel discussion on UTV’s 'Adekye Nsroma' programme, Kweku Boahen further chided the NPP leadership for what he described as “lack of commitment to finding solutions and also seriously contradicting the President on the matter”.
The NPP has officially written to the opposition NDC inviting them to dialogue on disbanding vigilante groups associated with the two as directed by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
It would be recalled that President Akufo-Addo while giving the State of the Nation Address, directed both parties to meet on charting a path towards the disbandment of vigilante groups associated with them. Failure to do this, he said, will result in him (Nana Addo) effecting a legislation to disband the vigilante groups.
Nonetheless, the Deputy National Communications Officer of the NDC is of the view that the timing of the invitation underscores the level of disrespect being meted out to the President by his own party members.
