It'll Be a 'Misplaced Priority' To Compile a New Voters' Register Now – Yamin Tells EC Boss

Former Ashanti Regional Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Joseph Yamin has said it will be a misplaced priority for country if the EC boss, Jean Mansa decides to compile a new voters’ register for the next presidential and parliamentary elections in 2020.

According to him, the stipulated time for the nation to compile a new voters’ register is in 2022, therefore any form of excuse given to compile a new one by this government in collaboration with the EC boss will be a waste of state resources and against the laws of the country.

He said the serious aspect of this initiative by the EC boss is that the said matter was not discussed at the IPAC meeting she made reference to in a communique issued last week.

“What is so pressing about our voters’ register currently that will make us yearn for a new one. Indeed, by law Ghana needs a new register in 2022 and not now,” Mr. Yamin said.

Speaking on Adom TV’s ‘mpensenpensenmu’ programme, Joseph Yamin disclosed there will be no need for the Vice-President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia who heads the Government's Economic Management Team to address Ghanaians on the state of the economy at a town hall meeting on the theme: “Our progress, our status, our future” on 3 April 2019, after President Akufo-Addo has called on the necessary organizations involved to meet and review the high taxes and duties on imported items.

“What does Dr Mahamudu Bawumia need to tell us after the President has promised to lower taxes on imported items?” he asked.
