We Must Begin To Jail Contractors For Shoddy Works - Ras Mubarak

Member of Parliament for Kumbungu Constituency in the Northern Region, Hon. Ras Mubarak is advocating for prison sentence for Contractors who engage in shoddy works in the construction of drainage systems in the country.

According to him, the laws of the country must begin to arrest those Contractors who haphazardly construct the drainages during road constructions as these poorly constructed drainages partly responsible for flooding when it rains.

Commenting on Sunday's rains which got parts of Accra flooded, Ras Mubarak on Okay FM’s 'Ade Akye Abia' Morning Show added that the Civil Engineers who are supposed to ensure the type of drainage systems needed for the cities, towns and villages are sleeping on their jobs.

He reiterated that as a country “We should be thinking about solid underground drainage system which can collect rains from the various drainage systems . . . but we have open drains and there is more trash being put into our respective gutters and that equally causes flood . . . I think we should begin to jail people by now as a country."

He however lay the blame at the doorstep of Ghanaians, especially those in the cities as they have not learnt anything from the June 3 flood and fire disaster at Nkrumah Circle which claimed many lives.

He again charged the government to do more education on littering and implement the laws against littering.

“ . . The drainage in Circle is big enough to have contained any magnitude of water, but it is choked due to littering, and the Assembly has the responsibility to distil the gutters . . . so as we are advising government officials, we as the individuals should be advised as well that our activities in the country will bring problems for us and the next generation,” he advised.

He added that rainfall should be a blessing to the nation other than causing horrific scenes in the country due to human error and shoddy works of contractors.

“We expect that when it rains, it will bring happiness to everyone as farmers are excited for the rainfall but while they are excited, others are terrified for the rainfall as it can cause the lives of others,” he opined.
