Another Sabotage? Gas Pipelines At Tema Torched By Suspected Arsonists

Another attempt to destroy government property and temper of power supply in the country has been foiled as unknown arsonists attempted to torch some gas pipelines within the Tema enclave.

According to Public Relations Officer for the Energy Ministry, Nana Damoah, the gas pipelines supply fuel to the generating center of the Authority at the Tema industrial area.

Nana Damoah who was speaking in an interview on Citi Eyewitness, Monday, indicated that “Last night (Sunday), some security men doing some regular checks along the pipelines that take one of the generating plants within the Tema enclave discovered that some persons had packed car tyres over some pipelines that were transmitting fuel to the generation plant and had torched these tyres, so they were burning.”

He expressed sadness over this development especially as it comes on the back of the destruction of some pylons near the head office of state power transmitter Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo).

Nana Damoah says "it gets more confusing and it gets sadder that as we are facing challenges and working hard to get the people of Ghana out of the challenges that we are facing, there are some very determined persons who also wish that we will stay in the condition for a longer period. Investigations into this development have begun.”

He has however assured that the incident at Tema will not cause any power outage.

Energy Minister, John Peter Amewu, had condemned the destruction of some pylons near the head office of state power transmitter Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), describing the perpetrators as “thieves” and “animals”.

The pylons, which were destroyed on Monday, 25 March 2018, were discovered by some GRIDCo staff.

Mr Amewu, who inspected the destruction, pointed out that there were measures to protect such installations and other strategic national assets.

He, however, added that the authorities “cannot be everywhere at every time and some of these thieves, some of these animals in our society will do things just to outwit the security”.

In his opinion, the action by the suspects constitutes “a complete sabotage” of the work of the power distributors.
