A total of five million coconut trees are expected to be replanted in the Western Region of Ghana.
The replanting campaign, according to the Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah, and Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria, Uboh Emmanuel, would be launched by the end of May 2019.
The Region is joining forces with Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria in undertaking the project.
Akwa Ibom State in Nigeria has planted over one hundred and ten hectares of coconut and is in the process of building the largest coconut processing factory on the entire continent.
The announcement was made during separate speeches of the two dignitaries at the City Wide Thanksgiving Service instituted by Bishop Ogyiri Asare’s Zion Praise Chapel.
Coconut plays a major role in economic growth, household income and nutrition.
It is insightful to know that the Western Regional Agricultural Office states that every 45 minutes a truckload of coconut leaves the major coconut zone of Jomoro, Ellembelle and Nzema East.
