We Won't Prosecute Soldiers Accused Of Murdering Rokko Frimpong -- AG

The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Mrs. Betty Mould-Iddrisu, has file for the discontinuation of the trial of the five soldiers who were arrested by the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) and charged with the murder of the former Deputy Managing Director of the Ghana Commercial Bank, Mr. Rokko Frimpong. A statement released by the Office of the Attorney General on Friday said the State has decided to issue a Nolle Prosiqui in the case. Though the Attorney General is not obliged to disclose reasons for the Nolle Prosequi the release said the State has taken into consideration the public interest this case has generated and after reviewing the two case dockets in existence over the murder of Rokko Frimpong, it has come to the conclusion that it is more justifiable to prosecute the suspects who were initially charged by the Police for the murder. The imminent issuance of a nolle prosiqui in the case in which Sergeants Michael Arthur, Richard Somuah and Lamptey Haizel and Corporals Charles Ankumah and Emmanuel Antwi have been accused of murdering Mr Frimpong and charged with two counts of conspiracy and murder, is informed by the conviction of the office that the five soldiers need to be further investigated. The statement further noted that there are still questions concerning the involvement of the soldiers in the redenomination exercise and the AG has advised the BNI to sustain their investigations of the five soldiers with particular reference to their role and possible involvement with regards to the redenomination exercise, which took place in July 2007. Sergeants Michael Arthur, Richard Somuah, Lamptey Hazel and Corporals Charles Ankumah and Emmanuel Antwi were first arrested by the BNI in November and later charged with the murder of Mr Frimpong.
