One-Village One-Dam Projects Impressive- Special Initiatives Ministry

Contrary to a widespread objection that has greeted government’s One-Village One-Dam initiative in the Northern part of the country, the Ministry of Special Initiatives says it is impressed with the work done so far on some dams under the initiative.

Government has come under heavy criticism over the construction of the dams which have been described as shoddily done.

But Public Relations Officer(PRO) of the Ministry of Special Initiatives Awudu Moro Kabore insists the works done so far have met the specifications as prescribed by the ministry.

Responding to some questions on Bolgatanga based Yem Radio Mr. Moro said the responses from some residents of beneficiary communities in the Upper East on the state of the newly constructed dams do not reflect the actual situation.

“We have also spoken to community members and the responses are different from the impression created. They are happy about the work done except the one dam in the Kasena area that had its bank washed away”

“There are specifications for these dams that were set by technical people. And so far most of the dams have met our specifications” he said.

According to him, none of the dams constructed in the Upper East region has been fully completed adding “You know how our financial processes work, the contractors have raised certificates and yet to receive some payment. So you will see them back there to finish the work. What you see is not the final work”.

When asked whether the ministry is impressed with the work done so far, he said “once our specifications of the dams have been met we are impressed”.

Meanwhile, President Nana Akufo-Addo has pledged to investigate allegations of shoddy work in the construction of dams under the government’s One Village One Dam project in northern Ghana.

According to the President, media reports about the poor quality of work on the dams will not be overlooked.
