Rokko Soldiers March Home

The Osu Magistrate Court in Accra was yesterday thrown into a state of pandemonium when ecstatic family members of the five soldiers who were detained for their alleged role in the murder of former Deputy Managing Director of the Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB) Mr Rokko Frimpong trooped into the precincts of the court to congratulate and welcome their loved ones who have been away from home since November 2009. The soldiers Sergeants Michael Arthur, Richard Somuah, Lamptey Haizel, Corporals Charles Ankumah and Emmanuel Antwi were freed yesterday, following a nolle prosequi entered last Friday by the Attorney General (AG), indicating that she was no longer interested in prosecuting the accused persons. A statement released by the office of the Attorney General on Friday stated that although the Attorney General is not obliged to disclose reasons for the Nolle Prosequi, the State has taken into consideration the public interest generated by the case. The AG made it clear in the statement that after reviewing the two case dockets in existence over the murder of Rokko Frimpong her office had concluded that it was more justifiable to prosecute the suspects who were initially charged by the Police for the murder. The statement went on to say that there are still questions concerning the involvement of the soldiers in the redenomination exercise and the AG has advised the BNI to sustain their investigation of the five soldiers with particular reference to their role and possible involvement with regards to the redenomination exercise, which took place in July 2007.
