Saturday marks exactly one month when the government of Ghana implemented a closed season for fishing along the coast of Ghana, the implementation of the policy was to ensuring that the fish stock in the territorial waters are replenished.

The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture begun a campaign last year to make fishermen in Ghana observe a closed season to allow for fingerlings in the sea to grow and multiply.

The advocacy did not go well with the fishermen but with the education on the closed season, fisher folks decided to comply with the decision taken by the government.

A visit to some beaches especially Winneba in the central region this morning was characterized with a delightful sight of activities by some fishermen and women. People had also trooped in to the beach upon the announcement of a bumper catch by the Sebeh Boat.

The fishermen in Effutu were so happy with the turn of events today when they returned from sea.

One Nana Kwesi Johnson a fisherman at the Winneba expressed his gratitude to the government for the bold steps taken and further expressed their utmost excitement to the government having realized the importance of the closed fishing season.

The one month closed season has helped them as they were able to care of their health and families within the period.

Mr. James Dadzie also indicated that the closed season gave them the opportunity to do repair works and carry out some maintenance on their canoes and fishing nets.

He therefore expressed gratitude to government for showing great concern about their activities as fishermen in the country and promised to abide by any initiative that will help their field of work by the government.
