Controversial match-winner Miroslav Klose has admitted his late goal for Bayern Munich against Fiorentina in the Champions League last 16 first leg was struck from an offside position.
"My instinct told me that I was offside, but it was only when I saw the television pictures that I was sure of it," said the German international.
Fiorentina put up a real fight and were disappointed to be denied a draw after Klose's 89th-minute goal was allowed.
Klose's goal was not the only controversial point of the game. 15 minutes earlier, Massimo Gobbi was issued a straight red card for an elbow to Arjen Robben's face. Whether a deliberate swing was taken or Robben simply ran into the defender's elbow has been a real point of debate in the post-match discussion.
To be fair, Bayern were also the victims of poor refereeing late in the first half, when referee Tom Henning Ovrebo disallowed a Mario Gomez goal. Instead of allowing play to continue, Ovrebo was quick to award a penalty for a foul on Franck Ribery. Robben stepped up to the spot and made sure his team would not suffer from the referee's decision, tucking his spot kick into the lower-right corner of the net.
After conceding that his goal should have been disallowed, Klose added: "Of course we are happy that we managed to take the win."
