Fake 'Nurse' Jailed 22 Months

The Madina District Court has sentenced one Francis Awine Anaafo, a 33 year old dismissed nursing trainee to 22 months imprisonment for using forged documents to impersonate and undertake national service at the Goaso Municipal Hospital

Anaafo has earlier been dismissed from the Nursing and Midwifery Training College at Sekondi in the Western Region

He was charged with defrauding by false pretenses and impersonation using the forged document to represent himself as a qualified nurse at the hospital and was convicted after the trial.

Mr Anaafo had pleaded not guilty to the charges.

According to the prosecution on February 21, 2019, the Medical Superintendent of the Goaso Municipal hospital wrote to inform the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) that Mr Anaafo, who was then using the name Simon Yaw Woli was underperforming, so he should be investigated.

The Prosecution said Mr Felix Nyante, the Registrar of the NMC upon receipt of the letter summoned Mr Anaafo to the Council's Head Office, where he was made to present his certificate of registration, results slip and National Service Log Book.

The Prosecution said upon screening the documents, the Council detected that Mr Anaafo fraudulently used the name of Mr Simon Yaw Woli, who is a qualified Nursing practitioner, to obtain a extract-of-occurrence from the Ministries Police Station to the effect that his certificate, results slip and log book were missing.

The Prosecution said Mr Anaafo then fraudulently acquired a duplicate of the copy of Mr Woli's Registered General Nursing (RGN) Certificate with the extract and presented it to the National Service Secretariat to register for the 2018 national service, and was later posted to the Goaso Municipal hospital to commence his service in September that year.

The NMC in a statement explained that Officials from the Intelligence and Disciplinary Department of the NMC, in the course of their investigations, contacted the real Simon Yaw Woli who had his original RGN certificate and results slip in his possession.

He said further search revealed that both Mr Woli and and Mr Anaafo commenced the NMC Training College in Sekondi in August 2013, but in 2015, the accused person was demoted and later sacked from the school for non-performance.

He said this led to the arrests of Mr Anaafo and after investigations he was charged and arraigned
