The Speaker of the United States Congress, Nancy Pelosi, has acknowledged the contribution of the over 200,000 Ghanaians resident in America.

Ms Pelosi, who addressed Ghana's Parliament on Wednesday, 31 July 2019, said: “We are blessed in America with about 200,000 Ghanaians who are just adding vitality to our country”.

Pelosi was accompanied to Ghana by the black caucus of the US Congress, as part of Accra’s ‘Year of Return’ to mark 400 years since the first African slave landed in James Town, US.

She told Ghana’s Parliament that she sees the country as a key partner in various sectors of cooperation.

The US, Pelosi noted, is strengthening the friendship between the two countries established by Ghana’s first President Dr Kwame Nkrumah over six decades ago.

The era of slavery, she lamented, was a “sad history” but expressed optimism of a “better and more productive relationship between the US and the continent of Africa”.

Ms Pelosi, in an earlier meeting with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Monday, 29 July 2019, complimented the strength of Ghana in her role as an exporter of security and global peace, stating that: “Militarily, politically, culturally and in every way, we salute Ghana.”

She praised Ghana’s democratic credentials and relative stability within the region.
