Concerned Supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Central Region, on Tuesday staged demonstrated in Cape Coast against the decision of the regional disciplinary committee of the party to suspend its First Vice Chairman, Horace Ekow Ewusi.

The group marched along the Accra-Cape Coast Highway and through some principal streets in Cape Coast and to the regional party’s office wearing red hand bands and red ‘T’' shirts amidst drumming and shouting.

They carried placards with the inscription, "unfair treatment of Ekow Ewusi must stop", "Chairman Kutin must go" and "let's unite the party for election 2020".

Mr. Derick Ntim Boamah, one of the conveners of the group speaking at a News conference ahead of the demonstration, described the decision as “dubious and unlawful attempts”, alleging that it was being masterminded by the Regional Chairman, Robert Kutin Jnr to tarnish the reputation of Mr. Ewusi.

According to him, the group was worried about how events were unfolding which he said could affect the fortunes of NPP in the 2020 general election and called on the party to reconsider its decision.

"We believe NPP is a party of laws and as party faithful, we will go any length to defend that when it comes under threat from any quarters or individuals" he said.

Mr. Boamah further alleged that the Regional Chairman was using veiled tactics and intimidation, noting that, such actions only brought disunity the party.

We stand a great danger of disarray and indiscipline in the party should we allow individuals to be bigger than the democratic culture of our party" he said.

"We also have election 2020 staring at us, we cannot accommodate individual whims and parochial interest to decide on the fate and future of the party at large", he added.

He said: "We are reliably informed that on July 31, 2019, the Central Regional Executive Committee of our party met at the Regional Coordinating Council to consider a report by the Regional Disciplinary Committee on Mr. Horace Ekow Ewusi".

Mr. Boamah said, the recommendation by the Disciplinary Committee was that, Mr. Ewusi failed to attend their meeting to discuss an earlier purported suspension by the Regional Chairman.

"We are reliably also informed that there was a total disagreement by the committee to accept the recommendation based on the fact that, the very invitation by the disciplinary committee to Mr. Ewusi was flawed because the Regional Chairman on his own, has no locus to suspend a "colleague" chairman at the regional level" he said.

He noted that, the said meeting ended up in chaos and was followed up with a petition by 14 out of 23 constituency chairmen in the region to distance themselves and condemned the Regional Chairman's acceptance of the recommendation by the disciplinary committee.

Mr. Boamah called on the National Executive Committee of the party to call the regional chairman to order to save the NPP in the region.

He expressed the group's optimism that the national leadership of the party would handle the matter with fairness and speed, saying, "We will call on all concerned supporters in the region to remain steadfast in the interest of our great party".
