Christian Agyei, the 24-year-old houseboy accused of having a hand in the murder of Josephine Asante-Tanoh, the Marketing and Public Affairs Manager of Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), has secured bail at the Criminal Division of the Accra High Court.
He was granted bail in the sum of GH₵200,000 with two sureties, one to be justified, after being denied on two occasions by the same court.
However, the bail is yet to be executed due to strict administrative procedures associated with such situations.
Baba Jamal, counsel of the accused person, told the TDC Magistrate Court in Tema that although he personally handed over a copy of the bail letter from the Registrar of the High Court to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service in Accra, the police are yet to act on it.
The houseboy of the deceased was arrested after he was found burying a cash sum of GH¢430 and a wristwatch at the crime scene on the day of the incident.
Christian Agyei and Amos Aprako (the official driver of the deceased) are facing a provisional charge of murder at the TDC Magistrate Court.
Apraku, a staff of GPHA in March 2019, secured a bail of GH₵200,000 with two sureties, one to be justified, but Agyei was denied by the court.
Meanwhile, information gathered by the DAILY GUIDE indicates that the accused person is using a property at Alhaji, a suburb of Accra, as part of the process to secure bail but the police are yet to visit the property for him to be released.
The Magistrate Court presided over by Mrs. Akosua A. Adjepong, therefore, ordered the prosecution to ensure that the necessary processes are followed to grant the suspect bail.
The court further asked the police not to adopt ‘delay tactics’ to extend the suspect’s stay in custody.
Case Docket
The prosecutor, Inspector Cecelia Mensah, who held a briefing for the substantive prosecutor (Inspector Beatrice Arye) told a Tema Magistrate Court that a duplicate docket on the alleged on the murder of Mrs. Josephine Asante-Tanoh has been forwarded to the Attorney General’s (A-G) Department for advice.
She said that the police are waiting for the said advice from the A-G to determine the way forward for the case.
The public affairs manager of the Tema Port was brutally killed at her Emefs Estate home near Afienya in the Ningo-Prampram District of the Greater Accra Region on January 13, 2019.
She had reportedly returned from a senior staff-end-of year party organized by the GPHA, only to be killed by her assailants.
