AVRL Installs Bulk Meters To Control Losses

Aqua Vitens Rand Limited (AVRL), acting on behalf of the Ghana Water Company, yesterday began the installation of bulk and zonal meters at the Weija Waterworks as part of its loss control measures. The exercise, which is to be carried out in waterworks across the country at the cost of GH4.2 million, will help AVRL to accurately determine on a daily basis the volumes of water produced in each treatment plant and supplied to the communities and zones on a daily basis, besides accounting for the losses n the system. The bulk and zonal meters will also help to calculate more accurately, non revenue water. It will eventually support the detection of illegal connections, by passes and other malpractices. The Greater Accra Regional Production Manager of the AVRL, Michael Amuakwa, who conducted journalists round the Weija Waterworks in Accra, told the Times that a total of 373 bulk metres would be installed nationwide by Dizengoff Ghana Limited. He said the exercise, which necessitated the shutdown of the Weija Treatment Plant, would allow for other minor maintenance works to be carried out. Mr Amuakwa said the maintenance works would cover the replacement of non-return valves, cleaning of screens at the pump house and the cleaning of contact tanks. Such minor works, he said, came at an opportune time since it was routinely carried out once a year and could stimulate a shutdown, thus, saving precious working hours and inconvenience to the customers. The regional production manager was optimistic that the exercise would be completed on schedule to restore water supply. Mr John Abu-Gyansah, a distribution specialist at the AVRL, said the contract for the installation was awarded in 2008 but was delayed due to some unmet specifications of the metres needed for the installation, which he said, was necessitated by the numerous broken bulk metres which made it difficult to determine production levels and waste in the system.
