NPP Has No Interest Creating Tension Between Asantehene And Ex-Prez Mahama – Sammy Awuku

Sammy Awuku, the National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has refuted claims by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) that the NPP has planned to pitch former President John Dramani Mahama against Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

The National Democratic Congress on Monday, September 16, 2019 alleged that members of the NPP are conniving to incite the Overlord of the Asante Kingdom against Mr. Mahama.

Delivering a speech at the UN General Assembly, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II disclosed that his Palace made a timely intervention by “coaxing” the former President and NDC flagbearer to concede defeat during the 2016 general elections.

Addressing the NDC's claims in an interview with Joy News, Sammy Awuku questioned the logic in the claims wondering why the NDC would involve the NPP in their internal fracas.

“First, NPP did not deliver the speech or write the speech for Asantehene and also not responsible for Mr. Julius Debrah’s speech...It is a clear case between NDC and Manhyia Palace. So, where did the NPP come into the equation,” he asked.

Setting the record straight, he stated that NPP has no interest to create tension between Asantehene and the former President.

“In 2012, the then candidate Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party disagreed with the election outcome but however called for calm and resorted to court and pleaded his case before justice of the Supreme Court. This was a complete reversal of what had happened in other places, clear example of what happened in Kenya which led to thousands of people being slaughtered through political violence but Nana Addo instead of violence decided to take the legal rule and in fact, in 2012, many Ghanaians came to understanding of the whole electoral process...How many people knew what was called the pink sheet, collation sheet? 'You and I were not there' even became a slogan", he noted.

"But in the case of 2016, almost every Ghanaian ensured that the details and what goes on in the pink sheet becomes the true reflection of what happened at the various polling station. So, if you are telling us that somebody who helped deepening our democracy and also helped in educating our people on electoral matters cannot be a better democrat, then I just don’t get the NDC...” he stressed.
