A leading member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has warned of a massive civil unrest in the country should the NPP-led Akufo-Addo government go ahead and implement its planned “Comprehensive Sexuality Education” (CSE) policy from the basic level.

Koku Anyidoho, a one-time Communications Director at the Presidency during the tenure of Professor John Evans Atta Mills, that the Atta Mills Institute together with other civil society organisations and individuals who have spoken out aganist the introduction of the CSE, will hit the streets soon. 

“I want to assure that the Atta Mills Institute will be ready to get involved; we shall mobilize mass movement in this country against Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE). We will not accept this policy. You are going to introduce such policy and use $100 million dollars to build a Cathedral, do you think God will listen to our prayers when we pray to Him in that Cathedral?”, he questioned.

Beginning next year, pupils in all public schools, including 4-year olds will be given CSE courses. Officials say the subject content would, however, be age-appropriate, so the toddlers would be empowered with values that would protect them from sexual harassment.

The programme has however come under intense backlash.

Critics say it is part of an active strategy by the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) movement to get acceptance - especially in Africa, where resistance has been most strong.

But the Ministry of Education and its partners deny these accusations.

Introduction to the CSE Guidelines leaves readers in no doubt about the purposes of the programme. Among other things, students are expected to "acquire accurate information on sexual rights and reproductive health." 

It will also help students "nurture positive attitudes and values including open-mindedness, respect for self and others, positive self-worth/esteem, comfort, none judgemental attitudes, sense of responsibility concerning their sexual and reproductive health."

But speaking in an interview on Okay FM’s Ade Akye Abia Morning Show, the former NDC Deputy General Secretary questioned the decision by the Akufo-Addo government to raise $100 million dollars to construct a Cathedral when the country has an unenviable record as the second on the continent after Sudan, struggling with open defecation issues.

“After all, doesn’t the Bible tell us that cleanliness is next to godliness? So, they have $100 million to build a Cathedral; why don’t we use it to clean the environment? We have not finished cleaning the environment and we are going to dirty the souls and the spirit of future generations”.

“...we live in a dirty country, a filthy country, open defecation, dirty gutters and refuse is killing us, indiscipline on our roads; we have not addressed all these challenges, we are now going to dirty the spirit and the soul of our 3 to 5-year-old children and you think God will forgive us? How is God going to bless this country if this is what are going to do?” he angrily stated.
