Pensioners Demand 20% Increment

Pensioners of the Migrants and Labour General Workers Union say the latest increment in utility tariffs gives cause to their call for a 20% increase of their pensions.

The union is also asking government to provide decent jobs for pensioners and retirees in the country to enable them generate decent pensions.

According to them the standard 10% increment does not reflect the current cost of living in the country, making it impossible for retirees to live in dignity.

Speaking in an interview with Accra based Starr FM, president of the union, Mr Moses Tei Partey said most pensioners in Ghana are paid between Gh¢300 and Gh¢500, which he says is woefully inadequate.

He also added that because of the minimal amount they receive, they are unable to take care of their responsibilities as well as afford some social services such as hospital and utility bills.

In accordance with this year’s theme for the celebration, “The Journey to Age Equality” which focuses on pathways of coping with existing and preventing future old age inequality, Mr Tei Partey urged Government to play its part in ensuring that the purpose of the theme is achieved.
