The Administrator of the District Assemblies Common Fund, Irene Naa Torshie Addo, has appealed for massive participation in the impending referendum.

A vote for yes in the referendum to determine the election of MMDCEs, she noted, is a panacea for development that the citizenry is advocating for.

According to her, the referendum is a move by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to cede some of his constitutional powers to constituents so they can hold the chief executives of their various areas directly accountable.

Madam Naa Torshie made this clarion call at the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Greater Accra Women’s Conference under the theme: ‘Why the party should vote yes at the upcoming MMDCEs referendum in December.’

She said, “DCEs will no more have any more excuses because the President has given you, the people, the power to determine who to choose as DCE and if they fail to perform you can remove them from office by yourselves without recourse to any person.

The Administrator observed that by the current law, the President has the prerogative to appoint DCEs, therefore, making them directly accountable to him.

“However, when you vote yes in the referendum, the appointing power of the President will now reside in you and therefore makes all DCEs answerable to you the people.”

“So this is not about NDC or NPP, this about you, the people, and the development of your communities.”

“Whether you are NDC or NPP, you need to go out in your numbers and vote massively for ‘Yes’ to ensure you accept that power to appoint your chief executives in future.”

She stated that President Akufo-Addo, by his wisdom, has observed the win-win situation in Ghana’s politics is not progressive as every authority resides in the sitting president.

“That is how it is in other countries including Nigeria, South Africa among others. However, President Akufo-Addo is bringing a novelty to ensure every political party will have their own trusted agent of development in their strongholds.”

“Let the NDC take Volta Region, let NPP take Ashanti Region, let CPP take Central Region and let PNC take Upper West Region so that Ghana can develop.”

“So that everything will not belong to the party that wins power but those in opposition will also have their parts to play in developing the country,” she added.

She argued that sometimes political parties in power deliberately hold up development for some areas because such areas are controlled by the opposition.

This, she said, does not bode well for the country’s development.

She urged Ghanaians, regardless of their party affiliations to go out and vote massively in the referendum to ensure the new development path being charted by President Akufo-Addo becomes successful
