Botched PDS Deal: Government Risk Paying Judgment Debt To PDS - PIAC Boss

Chairman of the Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC), Dr. Steve Manteaw has explained that the government risk paying judgment to PDS after their contract was terminated.

According to him, the government did not take the due process in terminating the contract of PDS and that the government of Ghana would be made to pay a huge judgment debt should the Directors of PDS decide to go to court.

Speaking on Okay FM’s 'Ade Akye Abia' program, he explained that if the government feels that PDS engaged in any fraudulent act in securing the ECG concession then they should go to court to have the deal properly terminated.

He believes that the government framed up the fraud allegation leveled against PDS just to paint them black and ultimately have the agreement aborted.

"The government is treading on very delicate ground and they need to be careful. To offend the Americans, the implications may even go beyond just the regional compact," he said.

He added that the country may even lose several development aids from the U.S.

"There’s no doubt this may affect the U.S – Ghana relationship, and can actually permeate other spheres of our relationship with the U.S which may ultimately affect the economy."

The Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has disclosed that the government will commence processes to terminate the concession agreement between it and the Power Distribution Services.

The move follows the announcement of the cancellation of the contract by the Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta after a meeting with officials of the Millennium Challenge Corporation.

Addressing the press on the issue, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah said the government is committed to giving value for money for Ghanaians with the supply of power.

ECG takes over power distribution

A statement dated 23rd October, 2019 indicated that ECG has assumed full operational and financial control which was being managed by the PDS.

This comes after the government’s termination of its concession agreement with Power Distribution Services (PDS) on claims of fraud.
