The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has discredited claims that it is secretly recruiting some persons into the service.

It said it is only screening some prospective servicemen who had applied in the previous year.

The Ranking Member of the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, James Agalga recently alleged that the government is secretly recruiting its cronies into the Police, Fire, Immigration and Prison Services.

The National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) MP for Builsa North added that the secret recruitment was targeted as getting sympathizers of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) enlisted into the various security services.

“Just as the recruitment of personnel into the Police Service in 2018 was characterized by outright nepotism and procedural breaches, the recruitment exercise which is currently ongoing is to say the least, fraudulent. In 2019, there has been no advertisement whatsoever for recruitment into the Police Service.”

“Consequently, no applications have been received or processed in the e-recruitment portal of the Police Service which can be accessed online. And yet, certain individuals have been invited and are being taken through medical screening for purposes of getting them recruited,” he said.

The Minister for Interior, Ambrose Dery earlier described the allegations as baseless.

The Immigration Service also in a press statement said those it is currently screening were persons from the backlog of those who applied to join the service in 2017/2018.

The attention of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has been drawn to news making the rounds in the media about secret recruitment into the security services including the GIS.

Management of the GIS wishes to state that the Service is not conducting any such secret recruitment.

The truth of the matter is that, the Service is currently conducting a screening exercise to select prospective applicants from its backlog of applicants who applied to join the Service during its 2017/2018 recruitment exercise.

Accordingly, the exercise is being conducted through a financial clearance by the Ministry of Finance to the Ghana Immigration Service.

This current screening exercise is therefore a continuation of the previous recruitment drive to exhaust the backlog of qualified applicants in our database.
