The National Communication Director of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Yaw Buaben Asamoa, has stated that the Government of the United States respects the decision by Ghana to terminate the Power Distribution Services (PDS) Concession Agreement, saying the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is only displaying hypocrisy about the issue.
He said at a news conference in Accra yesterday that the ‘noise’ by the NDC would not deter the NPP government from staying focused and doing what is right for the people of Ghana.
According to Mr. Asamoa, the NDC members continue to make unsubstantiated allegations against NPP leaders including the President on the PDS deal but said it was the stock-in-trade of the opposition party and asked Ghanaians to disregard them.
“The government will continue to seek the welfare of Ghanaians and will not yield to the noise and unsubstantiated allegations of corruption. President Akufo-Addo and his government are focused on ensuring Ghana becomes a better place and would not do anything to jeopardize the future of the country,” he said.
He stated that what Ghanaians are happy about is the fact that there are no power crisis or dumsor as it was witnessed during the Mahama NDC era, and said despite all the challenges with the power distribution system, the government had been able to work for the people.
Economy &2020
The NPP Communications Director revealed that the NPP would not allow the NDC which by all intent and purposes seems to lack ideas to dictate the campaign direction of the 2020 general election.
He said the NPP has a solid record for the campaign and would direct the focus of the election to the economy.
He indicated that the NPP had performed well in the management of the economy taking the country from a stringent International Monitory Fund (IMF) programme which was bequeathed the country by Mr. Mahama to a working economy.
Outlining some of the successes chalked up by the government in the area of the economy including growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP), drop in interest rate and inflation, among others, the NPP challenged the NDC to come out with their story on the economy after it was humiliated at its own economic policy lecture by a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, recently.
Bereft of ideas
Mr. Asamoa added that the NDC’s decision to solicit for ideas from over 30million Ghanaians in order to write their manifesto proves that the party is bereft of ideas and should not be allowed anywhere near governance.
“In opposition, you have all the time to do a lot of things, if with all the luxury of time at your disposal, you still need to collate views from 30 million Ghanaians, then you have no business thinking about coming into governance,” he said.
He also spoke about some successes chalked up by the Akufo-Addo administration in the area of education, infrastructure, among others.
Referendum
He reiterated the position of the party on the upcoming referendum, urging Ghanaians to come out in their numbers and vote ‘yes’ for the referendum which is scheduled for December, this year.
