The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has challenged the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to come out with alternatives to the government’s programmes instead of its illusive antics.

“Ghana deserves a serious opposition not the NDC,” the National Youth Organiser of the NPP, Henry Nana Boakye, said at a news conference in Accra to react to claims by the NDC that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was running a family and friends government.

He said because the NDC had no better alternative ideas it had resorted to ranting over baseless issues to divert the attention of Ghanaians from the government’s good policies.

He said the NPP as a government would not be distracted by the illusive antics of the NDC, and that the party (NPP) was committed to fulfilling the mandate Ghanaians had given to it.

He said President Akufo-Addo had not failed to deliver on his promises, pointing out that the Free Senior High School education, Planting for Food and Jobs, and the Nation Builders Corps (NABCO) programmes had all been introduced to make life better for the ordinary Ghanaian.

Family and friends

Nana Boakye stated that the NDC should not expect the President to appoint his enemies to steer the affairs of the state.

He said the people appointed to serve under the Akufo-Addo-led administration were qualified and competent people who deserved where they had been put to serve.

He denied claims that Vida Asante, the mother of the Executive Secretary to the President, Nana Bediatuo Asante, was on government payroll.

The NPP Youth Organiser said even if the people alleged to be family and friends of the President were indeed related to him, none had been given any treasure belonging to the state as former President John Mahama did by allegedly giving more than 80 per cent of the country's bauxite resources valued at $200 billion to his younger brother, just five days to the end of his administration.

Volta Region

He said the recent visit of President Akufo-Addo to the Volta Region where he was given a historic warm reception had shocked and destabilised the opposition NDC.

According to him, due to fears that the Volta Region, which was regarded as the stronghold of the NDC, was now throwing its weight behind the ruling government, the NDC was now resorting to politics of tribalism and division.

“2020 is Volta beyond NDC,” Nana Boakye noted, pointing out that the “Volta Region is deliberately weaning itself of its ancient dependence on the NDC.”
