A 40-year-old resident of Asuofia Asamang, Kumasi, is in the grip of the police for defrauding a couple who are both servicemen to the tune of GH¢95,000 Doris Opoku connived with her son, Kwabena Owusu, to sell the same property to the couple and another person.
She has been charged with defrauding by false pretence and has been arraigned before a Circuit Court in Kumasi.
Opoku, who pleaded not guilty to the count, has been admitted to bail in the sum of GH¢95,000 with two sureties, one to be justified by the court, presided over by Mrs Mary Nsenkyere.
She would reappear before the court on December 19, 2019.
According to the prosecution led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Felix Akowuah, Opoku also known as Akua Akyeaa or Abena Akyeaa sold her seven-bedroom house located at Amanfrom to Police Inspector Lydia Wemegah who is stationed at Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region and her husband, Mr Augustine Otu Appiah, a Fire Officer stationed at Winneba in the Central Region for GH¢95,000
ASP Akowuah said on May 4, 2017, both parties entered into an agreement that allowed the couple to pay by installments till August 30, 2019 by which time payment would have been completed.
The prosecutor said somewhere this year, Opoku made her son sell the same property to another person at the cost of GH¢90,000.
He said Inspector Wemegah later found out that another person was carrying out renovation on the same house and lodged a complaint with the police.
ASP Akowuah said during police investigations, it came out that Opoku who sold the house bearing the name of the son to the complainant, served as a witness when the son sold the same property to another person.
It also came out through the investigations that after reselling the house, she collected GH¢5,000 from the complainant again.
ASP Akowuah said Opoku was currently using the proceeds from the sale of the house to put up another house at Asuofia Asamang where she resides.
