No End In Sight To Our Strike Action – TUTAG Insist
The Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana has disclosed that there is no end in sight to their strike action.
According to them, they will only return to the classroom if the government pays their arrears owe them in full.
Speaking on Okay FM’s 'Ade Akye Abia' programme, President of the Association, Dr. Solomon Keelson explained that government was ordered by a court to pay them their arrears and until the government fulfils its part of the bargain they will never return to the classroom.
"When we met in court, the court ordered us (TUTAG) to go back to the classroom whilst the government was asked to pay by December, but the government has failed to honour its part of the deal," he said.
He also asked the National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE) to speak to government to pay them rather than forcibly asking them to return to the classroom.
He reiterated that they will return to the classroom to teach only when the government pays them, but until then there is no end in sight to their strike.
The Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG) has announced an indefinite strike effective Monday to protest the non-payment of allowances due to its members following the conversion of polytechnics to technical universities.
According to the Association, the government has “refused to fully comply” with the ruling by the National Labour Commission (NLC) to ensure that its members start receiving their allowances from December 2019, January 2020 and February 2020.
Addressing the media, National President of TUTAG, Dr Solomon Keelson, said, “salaries of December 2019 were paid without the said allowances with no official communication to that effect.”
“Government is doing everything to create a second-tier public university even though the NTC [National Tertiary Council] professes parity of prestige,” he said.
He added that TUTAG shall only call off the strike “upon the fulfilment of the National Labour Commission ruling on the 28th of October, 2019.”
The strike will disrupt teaching, invigilation and the marking of scripts in technical universities.
