The Minister for Education, Hon. Alex Tettey-Enyo, has disclosed that the government has decided to equip the youth who drop out of the primary and Junior High Schools with apprenticeship training in the formal and informal Sectors.
According to him, plans are far advanced to establish the National Apprenticeship Training Board under the Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (COTVET).
The Minister revealed this yesterday on the floor of Parliament in response to a question from the Asunafo South Member of Parliament (MP), Hon. George Boakye, about plans in place for basic school leavers who are unable to further their education.
He noted that the Curriculum of the programme covers 25 identified skill areas and will include communication, entrepreneurial and numeracy skills.
The Minister said, �15000 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) graduates will soon undergo training under the programme and apprentices will be assessed at the proficiency grade two level after one year of training."
Hon. Tettey-Enyo, also revealed that the government will be launching a free distance education in TVET at the Suame Magazine by June this year, courses to be offered will include automotive engineering welding and fabrication, masonry, carpentry, hospitality and tourism numeracy as well as English.
He noted that graduates after the distance training will be adequately prepared to start businesses at the level of their competence.
The Minister also responded to questions with regards to the distribution of the �one laptop per child� project as well as when a forensic audit will be conducted on the Ghana Education trust fund among others.
Meanwhile, the Report of the Lands and Forestry Committee�s Annual report of the year ending 31st December 2004 - 2006 was laid before the House.
