Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the Ashaiman Municipality say crossing the main street in the town is a nightmare due to its inaccessible nature.
Mr Courage Wormenor, Chairman, Ashaiman Branch, Ghana Society of the Physically Disabled, indicated that the road which stretched from the Ashaiman roundabout on the Tema-Akosombo road to the under bridge had no road signs, sidewalks and even pedestrian crossing, making a death trap for PWDs.
Mr Wormenor in an interview with the Ghana News Agency said PWDs in calipers, wheelchair and even the blind, struggle when crossing the road.
He disclosed that a number of PWDs had been knocked down as drivers refused to stop for them to cross while ‘okada’ operators also rode dangerously on the road.
According to him, due to the blockwork on the edges of the road, PWDs in wheelchairs who wanted to cross the road to the opposite side had to ride several metres to the curve at the traffic light, Presby junction or the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly junction, situation he described as very difficult as most PWDs did not have carers to help them on the road.
Mr Wormenor, therefore, appealed to the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly (ASHMA) and relevant authorities to make roads in the municipality accessible to PWDs to prevent needless knockdowns.
