New Voters' Register: Subin MP Condemns The ‘Hypocrisy’ of Kwesi Pratt, Others

The Member of Parliament for Subin Constituency, Eugene Boakye Antwi, has criticized Kwesi Pratt Jnr and other critics for opposing a decision by the Electoral Commission to compile a new voters' register.

"I listened to Kwesi Pratt when he said they will reject the results . . . where were all these people in 2012? Sometimes the hypocrisy of things that we do in this country . . ." he said this while contributing to a panel discussion on Peace FM's morning show 'Kokrokoo'.

The decision to compile a new voters' register has divided political parties in the country with one side being for and the other against. The anti new voters' register group led by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) claim there is no need for a new register and moreover, the timing is wrong and it is going to cost the taxpayer. The others led by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are solidly behind the EC's decision.

Kwesi Pratt reacting to this decision by the EC reportedly said it is going to be a useless venture to compile a new one.

"I want to submit here and now that 10 months is not a sufficient period for compiling a new voter register, and if you attempt to do it, it will throw the next elections into total chaos. From the point of view of common sense, we should shelve this useless adventure of compiling a new voter register. They say the EC is an independent body, what does that mean? nothing is more nonsensical than that claim . . . The EC has partial independence and not absolute independence," he indicated.

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission (EC) says it will begin compiling the new voters register for the December 2020 elections in April.

The Commission added it hopes to end the exercise by the end of May.
