New Voters Register: Charlotte Osei's Intransigence Is Why We Are Where We Are! - David Asante

Convener of a political pressure group, Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA), Mr. David Asante has revealed that the current voters’ register is replete with the names of some 4 million people who registered with the National Health Insurance card; in spite of a ruling by the Supreme Court that those names ought to be removed from the register.

According to him, during the era of Charlotte Osei as the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, the LMVCA, in an attempt to deepen democracy through proper voters’ register, went to the Supreme Court to seek interpretation of some of the actions of the Electoral Commission.

Speaking on Okay FM’s Ade Akye Abia Morning Show, David Asante, again said that his political pressure group went to the Supreme Court so the EC would be compelled to expunge those who registered with the NHIA cards from the voters’ register.

When the court asked EC’s legal counsel, he said the number is huge; it is over 4 million and the Supreme Court ruled that NHIA card should not be used to register for voters’ ID cards and so their names should be expunged but up to date, all those over 4 million names are still in the voters’ register”, he revealed.

The LMVCA Convener, who now backs the current EC's plans to compile a new voters register, added that in spite of the Supreme Court's ruling and subsequent directive, the EC under Madam Charlotte Osei blatantly refused to comply.

…we decided to speak on the raging matter of the voters’ register and our press conference was simple and that is, the previous calls for new voters’ register was initiated by political parties and civil society groups, but this call for new register is initiated by the EC itself and that is the difference between the two”, he stated.
