GWCL Records More Than 50% Decrease In Water Production In The Western Region

The Ghana Water Company Limited in the Western Region is producing as low as 2.3 million gallons of water a day out of the usual 4 million gallons it produces during peak period at its Daboase Treatment Plant in the Western Region.

Regional Production Manager Ing.Vincent Opoku Ware Darko during an interview with UTV news team blames the shortfall largely on unstable power supply and the unavailability of raw water due to galamsey activities near the main production point at Daboase and at the Pra River.
Unfortunately, activities of illegal alluvial small-scale miners on the Pra River have increased color and turbidity of the raw water.

Figures from Ghana Water Company Limited show that the turbidity of the raw water has increased from 850 Hu to 2.500 Hu.

This has caused the raw water to stagnant around the intake point thereby promoting algae growth which creates odor in the raw water.
Western Region Production Manager Vincent Opoku Ware Darko explained the challenge has increased the cost of production.

Currently, the company is dredging the intake point at the Daboase Treatment Plant. The company is hopeful the exercise will allow them to draw more water and increase production.

He stated the rationing will only be over when the rains set in.
