Coronavirus: Stop Making Political Capital Out Of Wuhan Students' Issue - Akufo-Addo Charges

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has disclosed that Ghanaian students studying in China have been given $500 each in the wake of the Coronavirus epidemic in Wuhan, China

He said even though that will not take away the emotional trauma they are going through, the option of evacuation has not been ruled out.

Ghanaian students in China have called on government to evacuate them following the outbreak of coronavirus.

North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa in a post on his facebook page, backed calls for the students to be evacuated.

According to him, “May it never be said of us that we have become the country renowned for waging expensive campaigns to attract largely rich and famous Africans in the diaspora through the ‘Year of Return’ and ‘Beyond the Return’ initiatives and yet cannot spend a fraction of that to evacuate our stranded compatriots in China.”

Delivering his fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA) in Parliament Thursday, in accordance with Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution, President Akufo-Addo said his goverment is in talks with the appropriate authorities to know the appropriate action to take and that "we have not ruled out the option of evacuating the students if it becomes necessary…"

Political gain

He further asked all making political capital out of the situation to desist from it since it's a very 'delicate situation'

“We have a delicate situation on our hands, Mr. Speaker and it doesn’t benefit anybody to try to score points by introducing ill-judged politics into this ongoing medical conundrum and humanitarian tragedy. And I entreat this honourable house to set up an example by helping to pour oil over troubled waters instead of instigating tension and spreading fear and panic among the young people” he added.
