The Chinese Ambassador t Ghana, Shi Ting Wang, has assured that Ghanaian students in China will be safe in spite of the outbreak of the Coronavirus in that part of the world.

He admitted that the fears of Ghanaian parents who have their children in China are genuine, but the Chinese authority, he said, will ensure their safety.

Ghanaian parents whose children remain trapped in the Coronavirus outbreak in China insist the government must fly the students back home.

The angry parents, who held a press conference in Accra on Tuesday, 18 February 2020, even say they are ready to foot the bill for the flight if the government does not have the financial resources to do so.

One of the parents, Mr Nhyira Agyapong, a lawyer, whose daughter and nephew are studying in China, told Class FM Tuesday: “For how long can these students be in their rooms? At some point – after two, three months – they’ll break down”.

Mr Agyapong said: “Now, the hospitals are not even safe so that even with a minor sickness, you can go there because now, whatever sickness that sends you to the hospital, it would be seen as being infected and you can see the consequence.

“So, that’s why we, as parents, are saying that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo should take steps and bring the children back home. If it is about the expenses involved, we, the parents, are ready to bear those expenses”, he said.

Addressing a news conference in Accra on Friday, 21 February 2020, the Chinese Ambassador said: “It is understandable that people are worried. We are human beings. Our authorities tasked to protect the foreigners of Hubei province and universities are working hard to keep the students safe. The universities keep doing routine inspections and monitoring the temperature of every student on a daily basis.”

“The Chinese municipal government has published a 24-hour English speaking services hotline for foreigners, including Ghanaian students. If any student feels unwell, the local government will respond immediately and arrange the student for medical treatment in time. Up till now, everyone is safe. Nobody reported a case of being infected,” he stated.
