"I Regret Being A Politician" MP

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Asunafo South in the Brong Ahafo Region, Hon. George Boakye has complained bitterly about the serious atrocities that have taken place at Sankore, a town in his constituency, in recent times. According to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP, the level of tension in the town was quite disturbing, putting fear in residents of Sankore. Speaking in an interview with Kwami-Sefa Kayi, host of Peace FMs Kokrokoo, he explained that some supporters of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) have taken the law into their own hands by inflicting wounds on supporters of the previous NPP government. He said, this group of five (5) people have, on many occasions committed various crimes against NPP supporters on the basis that their government was in power. Apart from that, he told Peace FM that these people have openly spoken out that no-one could stop them; neither the party leaders nor the police. And the furthest a case against them would go would be the Regional level in Sunyani. Why are they not being arrested since everyone knows them, he asked. He said he had reported their activities to the police and security services but nothing had been done about it. These five persons, according to Hon. George Boakye, have for sometime now been punishing people for no offences at all, in the form of caning them. He added that a list of names of persons has been posted on walls in Sankore with the number proposed lashes attached to their names, with the aim of inflicting corporal punishment on them for no reason. The least number of lashes for a person is 45, he said. For example, he said a few days ago, an NPP supporter who works at the Sankore Total Filling Station, who only gave his name as Isaac, was warned and he had to run away. He said the assemblyman for the area, Eric Opoku, had suffered a similar treatment as well. He explained that, at a point in time one Wofa Atta, an NPP sympathizer was giving about 750 strokes to the surprise of everyone. He told the host that on some occasions, warning shots are just fired to scare people. He referred to the instance where some NDC sympathizers allegedly went to the Kukuom Health Insurance Office to close it down. He has however lauded the chief of the town and his leaders for sitting and resolving the issue peacefully. Hon. George Boakye disclosed that he sometimes regrets being a politician, because of the party political conflicts. He is therefore pleading with the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the Brong Ahafo Regional Police Command, and the Goaso Divisional Police Command to cause the arrest of those persons who are not making the people of Sankore enjoy peace.
