The entire Central Business District (CBD) of the Tamale metropolis, the capital of the Northern Region will shut down on Thursday, April 2, 2020 to make way for an immediate mass disinfection exercise.

The exercise forms part of efforts by the government to prevent and contain the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) in the metropolis and its environs.
All traders in all markets and financial institutions within the entire CBD area and along the principal streets in the metropolis have been directed not to open their shops or businesses on Thursday, April 2, 2020.

Fallout

The disinfection exercise is coming off at a time the metropolis has recorded 10 positive COVID -19 cases among 10 ECOWAS nationals made up of eight Guineans and two Burkinabes with one of them, a female Guinean, aged about 21 escaping from quarantine thereby exposing the entire population in the metropolis to the deadly virus.

The escapee is yet to be recaptured as the Northern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) widens its scope of search for the female Guinean COVID-19 patient.

Announcement

In a release issued and signed by the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) for Tamale, Mr Iddrisu Musah to draw the attention of the public to the exercise, he called for the cooperation of the general public to ensure the success of the exercise in what he termed as "this difficult time".

Areas affected by the exercise

Among the markets to be disinfected are the Tamale Central market, Aboabo market, Lamashegu market, Kukuo and Bipela markets.

The exercise will also be carried out along some principal streets in the metropolis beginning from the main ADB bank to Agric traffic light to the Tamale Airport on the main Tamale-Walewale-Bolgantanga dual carriage way.

It will also be from the Agric traffic light to Abedi Pele roundabout to Lamashegu to Taysec junction and the Melcom road.

Again, from Nyohini to the main traffic light, from Zogbeli traffic light to Lamashegu second roundabout, Aliu Mahama road (Lamakara) and from the Vodafone office to the Choggu roundabout.

Residents

Meanwhile some residents who spoke to the Daily Graphic have welcomed the exercise, saying it is timely and important in the wake of the metropolis recording 10 positive cases of COVID-19 with one of the patients in quarantine escaping and nowhere to be found.
