COVID-19: Gov't Must Be Transparent And Accountable - Mahama Tells Akufo-Addo

Former President and NDC Flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama has called on the Akufo-Addo administration to be transparent with the people of Ghana on the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mr. Mahama noted that for the nation to succeed in fighting the pandemic, the government needs to be trustworthy and receptive to constructive criticisms.

Former President John Dramani Mahama held a digital conversation on Thursday, April 23, 2020 where he addressed a number of issues on the COVID-19 pandemic.

Among some issues he touched on were inadequate distribution of Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs), the government's relief packages to the vulnerable in society during the partial lockdown, the lift of restrictions on movements and how to overcome the pandemic among other related matters.

Mr. Mahama raised eyebrows over the number of COVID-19 cases that Ghana has recorded and the response from  government to address the situation.

He further expressed disappointment in the approach adopted by President Akufo-Addo and his government in fighting the pandemic, and hoped his decisions do not endanger the lives of Ghanaians.

Highlighting on some critical decisions that will help the nation to bounce back into a good shape, former President John Mahama advised the Akufo-Addo saying ''as a nation for us to succeed, we need to see from the government that leads us a demonstration of trust and respect for all no matter which people are involved or where they are coming from. We must be open to constructive criticism and be receptive to the pragmatic suggestions from experts. Because these are critical ingredients that will engender trust and a collective will to support the battle we are engaged in with this pandemic. It is not too late for us to unite, truly unite and to be transparent and accountable to the people. My fellow citizens, we're not in normal times. We must all put our shoulders to the wheel with patriotic zeal, devoid of partisanship and parochial interest and help with all our hearts and might to fight COVID-19 aggressively and decisively, and I believe together we will win''.
