Director of Elections at the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr. Serebour Quaicoo has bemoaned the largest opposition party’s absence at their recent Inter-party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting at its headquarters.
 
According to him, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presence at the meeting would have fast-tracked dialogue ahead of the compilation of the new voters’ register.
 
Dr. Serebour Quaicoo who was speaking in an interview on NEAT FM’s morning show ‘Ghana Montie’ however noted that the Commission ‘can do’ without the NDC in their quest to compile the new register.
 
“NDC is a major stakeholder so their presence would have been appreciated but we can still do without them. We can’t force them,” he told host Kwesi Aboagye. 
 
EC to start compiling new register from June
 
The commission has confirmed to the various political parties that it will commence its intended registration exercise next month despite opposition from some political parties who are seeking to have the exercise halted.
 
In an Inter-party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting at its headquarters on Wednesday, 27 May 2020, the EC said it intends using 30 days spanning from June to July this year to complete the exercise ahead of the December general elections.
 
The EC has also rolled out mechanisms to ensure strict adherence to various essential protocols in light of the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure the safety of Ghanaians.
