As a response to address the crisis of COVID-19, the Ghanaian Battalion (GHANBATT) serving with the United Nations Mission In South Sudan (UNMISS) have initiated an awareness creation campaign to prevent the spread of the virus.
The campaign was aimed at sensitizing key community leaders to disseminate the information to other community members.
A statement from the Battalion and copied to the Ghana News Agency said the initiative was part of GHANBATT’s Civil Military Cooperation (CIMIC) activities.
It said the CIMIC commenced on Friday May 22, 2020 in Koch and Gani counties and its surrounding towns which included; Rier, Panjchol, Nyailey, and Pathit. The statement said in all the towns visited, the GHANBATT CIMIC team led by Captain Jaspah Mawusi outlined some common signs associated with COVID-19 and preventive measures to practise to keep safe.
Quoting Captian Mawusi, the statement said he emphasised the need for social distancing in market places and avoidance of crowded places.
It said the team donated hand washing soap and posters to the communities to be placed at vantage handwashing points and other places in the towns to further disseminate information on COVID-19.
The statement said Gadkuai Gatchang, the Acting Executive Director of Koch County was full of praise for the bold step taken by the team and to GHANBATT for their continuous show of UN presence in the area through robust patrols.
It noted that before the awareness campaign by GHANBATT, they did not know the COVID-19 and its potency.
“He appreciated the initiative and assured the team of their support to educate the members of the community,” the statement said.
South Sudan has recorded 994 cases of COVID-19 with 10 deaths and 6 recoveries as of Monday, June 1, 2020.
